Sussex Thatching ltd At Drusillas Zoo
Here's our latest project, re-thatching the cafe at Drusillas Zoo in East Sussex.
It was quite a long job for us taking about nine weeks through the winter, we were a bit hampered by the short days but luckily the weather stayed pretty dry for us.
We first removed two of the three layers of old rotten reed until we reached a dry base coat of old thatch, we then re-thatched over this in a layer of new Hungarian Water Reed, fixed to the battens and rafters with steel rod and screws. This was then finished with a block cut ridge of Devonshire Triticale straw which was covered in wire mesh to protect from birds and vermin.
